One group of people or groups of people is dominated by another (external) group in terms of geography. Ethical, cultural, ethnic, political, mental or intellectual, and/or economic power. In colonialism, European powers exert dominance over non-European people through various forms of territorial domination.

According to Colonial Office officials. Van Diemen’s Land was initially a gaol and the rights of the former should be upheld. Since a Governor’s powers must not be abused. It is essential that they are not impaired. Even though this results in denying British liberties to colonists.

There was no elected assembly in this settlement, residents were subject to harsh censorship laws. And the settlement was governed by a hostile and ruthless police force supervised by a magistrate.

How Did Colonial Politics Compare with British Politics?

Here’s how did colonial politics compare with British politics?

The first half of Tasmania’s history is characterized by an aggressive colonist approach. Focused on gaining what they deemed. Their ‘pride and birthright,’ namely the means of freedom. Politics was obvious from the first day, even if it was just in the ‘pipes’. The rolled-up pieces of paper left at prominent points throughout Port Dalrymple to be read by locals.

After settlement outside of Hobart began. Members of the colony engaged in a great deal of political activity. Related to the granting of land and the arrangements for obtaining convict labor to work it.

Elected Representatives

Government by elected representatives, which replaced governors as the center of government power. Was plagued with a lack of party discipline within Parliament. With members naturally responding to political pressures from their electorates.

Sometimes at the expense of what was best for the entire community.

Even in the early years of self-government, parliamentary instability was a debilitating factor. As governments that survived for several years were unsure whether they would get enough votes to get their bills passed.

In most cases, the British government never had enough money to pay for everything. A settler society was needed on the sparsely populated island colony. Colonial economic development was hindered by regional politics.

There were several instances of this during the Legislative Council’s consideration of Supply. A powerful body that firmly insisted on its right to reject the legislation. To combat economic malaise, governments usually turned to taxation as a way to raise money.

Rich people dominated society due to restricted franchises, but there was a politically calm climate. Even though Tasmania had some industrial activity, it lacked a large union presence. The west coast mine opening of the 1890s marked a turning point. But union campaigns and a labor party were not as prominent as they ought to have been.

British Politicians

There was a sense of isolation among British politicians. Victorian trade was prohibited to them, hundreds of young men sought employment abroad and Tasmania was fearful of foreign attack.

Politicians who cultivated intercolonial relations flourished out of isolation during times of heightened defensiveness. During conflicts like the Spanish and South African wars. And during the introduction of the new national constitution. British’s fate was sealed by the Federation. We would join a vast and mighty empire in the southern seas. Eat would cost less and the state would have a future.
